| You probably know our story so far. In 1914, Bernard Gant, a Ukrainian shirtmaker, setup shop in New York’s Garment District and went on to manufacture shirts for some of the best brands in the business. He stamped a small diamond ”G” onto the bottom hem as a sign of quality craftsmanship. People picked up on this subtlety and started looking for the ”G” instead of the name on the neck label. Bernard and his team took note. Flash forward to 1949. No longer content with working as a silent supplier from New Haven, Connecticut, the Gant family decided to fly solo and introduce themselves personally to stores. A handshake here, a demo there, and ”Gant Shirtmakers” began appearing on the shelves. That’s all it took. The rest, as they say, is history. Gant Shirtmakers became one of the biggest selling shirt brands in America. We were huge. Everyone loved us. We were right there at the birth of American sportswear — producing gear for the ivy league set just as university style caught on. Gant Shirtmakers soon had deals with just about Men’s specialty store throughout the Northeast and soon spread across the country. By the mid 1960′s we were producing instant bestsellers and had become the largest shirt manufacturers in the world. Gant was shaping the look & feel of American sportswear — we were designing our own heritage. It was around this time that Bernard’s sons, now running the show, had another bright idea. They took the Rugby shirt off the field and created a brand new American icon — the Rugger. It was revolutionary. An utterly successful sensation and an entirely new ”Rugger by Gant” collection was launched on the back of it in 1973. The line, designed for a new light-hearted generation, was vibrant and bold. Less academic and more approachable, with innovative and cool details. Rugger by Gant was quintessential American sportswear and a winner from day one. But as the years rolled by, Rugger by Gant faded away, relegated to the back of closets, substituted for something else, and simply packed away. |
